Layer 1

NEAR Protocol

About Portfolio

NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is the native token of NEAR Protocol, a scalable and developer-friendly Layer 1 blockchain designed for speed, low cost, and ease of use. It leverages sharding, intuitive account models, and interoperability tools to support widespread dApp adoption, AI integration, and cross-chain activity.

Governance & Token Utility

The NEAR token facilitates transaction and storage fees, staking for network security, and on‑chain governance. It enables users to participate in protocol decisions and validators to earn rewards. A fee-burning mechanism supports network sustainability.

Key Milestones & Ecosystem Growth

  • Mainnet launched in April 2020, with Nightshade sharding implemented in phased upgrades

  • Introduced Aurora for Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and Rainbow Bridge for cross‑chain token transfers

  • Launched a blockchain operating system (BOS) to improve developer and user experience

  • Supported by major collaborations and grants, including integration of Tether (USDT), support from Google Cloud, and developer funding

  • Grew to tens of millions of users and vibrant ecosystems in DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and AI-native apps

Network Architecture

  • Utilizes Nightshade sharding to process transactions in parallel across multiple shards

  • Employs Proof of Stake consensus with delegations and validator selection

  • Features developer-friendly abstractions (named accounts, meta-transactions) and Rust/AssemblyScript support

  • Provides EVM-compatible environment via Aurora and cross-chain interoperability via Rainbow Bridge and Octopus Network
